The Command Task (CT) is designed to assess a candidate’s leadership abilities in the SSB interview. In this task, the candidate takes on the role of a commander, responsible for leading two team members (chosen from the group) to solve a specific obstacle-based challenge. The Command Task evaluates how well a candidate can give orders, delegate tasks, and execute solutions.
Watch our detailed video overview about Command Task (CT) in SSB Interview:
Rules of the Command Task
Selection and Briefing: The GTO calls candidates randomly and has a brief conversation to ease them into the task. After the briefing, the candidate is led to the task area, where the GTO explains the rules and asks the candidate to choose two team members as subordinates.
Role of the Commander: The candidate must lead the task by guiding and instructing their subordinates. The focus is on the candidate’s ability to command, delegate, and complete the task using the given resources.
What the GTO Observes
During the Command Task, the GTO assesses several aspects of the candidate’s leadership abilities, including:
Command Skills: The GTO looks for a clear and decisive command style. The candidate should provide precise instructions and logical solutions to the problem.
Delegation: The GTO observes how well the candidate assigns tasks and extracts work from subordinates.
Subordinate Choice: The GTO considers whether the candidate chooses team members based on their strengths and suitability for the task.
Problem-Solving: The GTO looks for creative and multiple solutions. Flexibility and quick thinking are valued traits.
Decisiveness: A good commander is decisive and acts confidently without hesitation.
Execution: The GTO evaluates whether the candidate can carry out their plan smoothly and adjust if necessary.
Key Points for Success in the Command Task
Listen to GTO Instructions: Pay close attention to the GTO’s instructions, as following them precisely is critical in all GTO tasks.
Select Suitable Subordinates: Choose subordinates who will best help you achieve the task. For instance, if the task involves heavy lifting, select someone strong. If the task requires agility, select someone small and nimble who can handle ropes and planks efficiently.
Avoid Asking for Ideas: As the commander, you are expected to lead. Avoid asking your subordinates for ideas unless prompted by the GTO. However, if you’re a subordinate, remain silent and follow the commander’s instructions unless the GTO explicitly asks for input.
Be Confident and Decisive: Take charge of the situation and make prompt decisions. The GTO will look for a confident leader who acts decisively and commands with authority.
Demonstrate Effective Problem-Solving: Think of multiple solutions and apply the best one. Use creativity and basic physics principles (such as fulcrum and lever concepts) to overcome obstacles.
Final Tips for the Command Task
Stay Focused and Calm: Keeping calm under pressure will help you make better decisions and lead your team more effectively.
Use Clear Communication: Give precise, easy-to-follow instructions to ensure your subordinates understand their roles in the task.
Adapt if Necessary: If your initial plan doesn’t work, don’t hesitate to adapt and try an alternative approach.
Showcase Natural Leadership: Display the Officer-like Qualities (OLQs) by leading confidently, remaining composed, and completing the task with teamwork.
The Command Task is a vital part of the SSB interview, revealing not just your ability to lead but also how well you handle pressure, make decisions, and inspire others to work with you. By approaching this task with confidence and a strategic mindset, you can demonstrate the skills and qualities sought after in a future officer.
